is it really that much better to use a lod with 3.5mm out than to use lod + 3.5mm to 3.5mm? i was told by the shop keeper such.... but doubt the significance of the improvement

well its certainly better for the jacks, doing it the other way adds considerable leverage. I wont comment otherwise as I would probably be crossing a line

Adding another connection point always introduces degradation - whether it is material degradation or not is open to debate (and may vary). An integrated (soldered) LOD to 3.5 mm jack avoids that extra connection.

There are such nice integrated solutions out there that there is really no reason not to use one. The two piece solution is clumsy if nothing else.
