Is the new little dot a good synergy with the beyer 880? i hear that it has less treble than the old little dot 2. since it is a tube amp im guessing that it would make the 880s a little more warm.

EDIT: oops ive got dy880 instead of dt880 in the title of the thread! oh my

That's how I roll ... LD II+ + DT880 @ work, and LD III+ + DT880 @ home...

(the DT880 was too good a deal; I bought two). And the way you heard is quite accurate. The LD II+ definitely 'softens' the presentation. The III+ is a much more 'up-front' amp and provides a lot more in the presence range through the DT880.

I can't speak for the 990 as I never heard them.

The LD uses a Directly Heated Triode [DHT] and what is being asking about the sound character is really best aswered by the question do you like DHT / DH-SET? As Cartman says, "it really takes the edge off man..."

There is no question the DT 880 sound characteristics through the LD is drastically different from how it sounds if driven directly out of a sound card or iPod for example. The LD II+ is not 'sharp and fast'. But it is also 'velvety' and 'engaging'. My very 1st experience without question was that I heard passages and sublte melodies -- with my AKG K240s as I didn't have the DT 880 yet -- with the phones driven through the LD then driven right from the iPod ; and even though they're 20 years old, those are from the 1st batch of the low impedance K240s, not the 600 ohm K240s, so an iPod or sound card can drive them (though its still hard to drive K240s, period).

No, the LD II+/DT880 combo is never fatiguing or excessively bright to me.

I would certinaly not say it is 'less clean', but I would say it is not as 'fast and sharp' as SS or perhaps even some other non-DHT tube amps. I don't consider that 'less clean' but you might; I don't know the semantics you put on/around that sound characteristic.

Do you mind elaborating on what you mean by less clean? I presume by less clean you meant "veiled" or "less airy."

Veiled? definitely not. Less airy? maybe, depending on what other amps/DT880 combinations you compare to. In my limited experience some headphone amps (especially SS amps) do give more airy presentations than others but it does not necessarily mean they are better; simply different characteristics.

I'm considering a LD2+ if they've fixed that arcing problem.

BTW, What's a DY 880?
