How noticeable is the performance difference (speed, rip and write quality) between the 48X and 52X Lite-On CD-RW drives?

Are there any particular models that are particularly desireable or any that should be avoided because of functional or mechanical problems?

probably only a small difference. it won't really matter because most cd's olny support up to 48x, thus you will only be able to burn at 48x with your burner, regardless of if it's rated at 52x max speed. i have a Lite-on 52x32x52 drive that i got from newegg and it's awesome.

If I remember correctly, Lite-On 48X's can be flashed to be 52X drives. In other words, the hardware is the same but it's the firmware that "limits" it to be a 48X drive.

As lan says, the best place to double check is the cdrinfo forum.
