I just bought em, but they're either not inserted correctly (don't think this is the problem) or my expectations were a little high. I examined my source material, Iriver IHP-120 but I don't think it's that or the music. Am I missing something? I want to get my money's worth out of them...

Give em time. That's one thing I learned from buying phones. Especially canals. Use them for at least week, then you'll be able to judge them as keepers or not.

I got a pair a couple of days ago. It sounded good with some types of music, but painfully highlighted the lack of solid bass response on most rock recordings.

I tried a lot of canalphones, and strangely, the E3 is very sensitive to correct insertion, much more so then other phones (including the Shure E2).
An incorrect insertion leads to immediate loss of bass, ginving an unbalanced, slightly shrill sound.
