Suedama---

buy the Sennheiser MX500s. $18, cheaper than the EX70s, superb sound and you won't cry if you lose em either. The 500s are an amazing little bargain, even if they're not on the Epinions list!!

I think the Denon AH-D950 are the most under rated cans. They should be in the top ten best.

How can it be that there is not one COBY or LabTech phone on the list.

And this is why i'm writing an audiophile headphone review database - only people with experience in medium to high end headphones will be allowed to review cans. I'll also have a "3 strikes and you're out" thing - if 3 people think your review is crap, your reviews aren't counted any more. See my sig for a link to the thread.

I might have to do a "top 10" page too...

If you do make a top 10 page, you're going to have to make it so that everyone is able to rank the headphones they have reviewed... and then somehow proceed to assign weighting, and combine all personal rankings into a central aggregate list. The problem with weighting is that you cannot work by popularity alone since the higher up the price ladder you go, the lower the number of experiences you will have on record. Of course, it is very likely you have already found a solution. In case you haven't... Just trying to help!

EDIT: I just realized thirty seconds after submission that I said "you're going to have to" which is contrary to the tone I meant to spin the suggestion with -- what it should read is "you COULD make it so that" -- my apologies! =)

I like Hirsch’s tiered approach, so I will list my favorites within the confines of that format:

Tier 1:
HE90 (never heard it but it’s the Orpheus so it automatically reserves a spot here
wink.gif
)
MDR-R10 (my favorite dynamic headphone – listen to it with a great tube amp like the Supra)

Tier 2:
K1000 (a very unique sound that is captivating and a midrange that is sexy)
L3000 (better than the W2002 but not worth the price to me)
PS-1 Pro (the detail of the HP-1 with the groove of the RS-1, but it IS a tad overwhelming in the bass department; I grew tired of its approach rather quickly)
HP-1 (faster and more accurate than the PS-1, IMO; however it’s not “fun” to me)
HD650 (my personal favorite dynamic after the R10; with the right balanced system it can reach Tier 1, IMO)
Stax Omega II (this ‘phone does amazing things when connected to the WEEBL, and though it approaches Tier 1 in certain regards it just doesn’t “do it” for me)

Tier 3:
W2002 (it’s good but too slow on leading edge of notes and sounds a bit hollow; the L3000 fills it up nicely)
DT880 (in some areas like treble extension it’s superior to the HD600, but it has a dry midrange, IMO)
RS-1 (a fun, forward headphone that has great resolution but it’s a bit unnatural to my ears)
HD600 (another one of my favorites – I admit my Senn bias – it does have a mid-bass hump, however)
MDR-CD3000 (a detailed, impact-full headphone that is just too artificial-sounding for my tastes)
SR-404 (sounds close to its Omega II brother, but it doesn’t quite exhibit the same control of bass to ascend to Tier 2 IMO)

Tier 4:
K501 (details, sweet midrange and wide soundstage; it lacks REAL bass no matter how much break-in is applied and what amp is driving it – I don’t care what the AKG Mafia threatens!
wink.gif
)
A1000 (a fast, detailed headphone that has a “wrong” midrange IMO; it’s still better than the W100 and W1000, however)
DT531 (more natural than the DT931 or even the 990-600ohm but its sound bored me after several months)
MS-2 (a detailed ‘phone that features tight bass and nice mids – it’s still too bright for me…damn Sennheiser acclimation…)
HD580 (approaches the HD600 in nearly every way but still lacks that last shimmer in the treble – an excellent hi-fi entry set of cans)

I’m too tired to list more tiers…Remember this is just my experience and opinions so don’t be offended.

P.S. Perhaps the Qualia 010 is in Tier 1 or 2, but I haven’t heard it yet.

Interesting thread, I think.

That is incorrect. My post was made yesterday September 28, 2004.

Neil i love your tiers. Very very very intriguing list. I agree with the R-10 in tier 1. Rats, financially unattainable. Right now all of your Tier 2 cans are somewhat attainable with a stretch and perhaps a sell/trade of my cans, but i have to say, my tier 3 and tier 4 cans are really growing on me/love it already so i might stay put until, say, my birthday next year when the HD700 comes out lol!
