With 14 albums down the road, I'd like to see which songs ranked the the top three.

Rules:
Three songs only! If you are forced to list and ranked them, just list the top three.

My All Time Top Three Fav:
1. Stagger Lee
2. Weeping Song
3. Idiot's Prayer

Stagger Lee:
It was back in '32 when times were hard
He had a Colt .45 and a deck of cards
Stagger Lee

He wore rat-drawn shoes and an old stetson hat
Had a '28 Ford, had payments on that
Stagger Lee

His woman threw him out in the ice and snow
And told him, "Never ever come back no more"
Stagger Lee

So he walked through the rain and he walked through the mud
Till he came to a place called The Bucket Of Blood
Stagger Lee

He said "Mr Mother****er, you know who I am"
The barkeeper said, "No, and I don't give a good *******"
To Stagger Lee

He said, "Well bartender, it's plain to see
I'm that bad mother****er called Stagger Lee"
Mr. Stagger Lee

Barkeep said, "Yeah, I've heard your name down the way
And I kick mother****ing asses like you every day"
Mr Stagger Lee

Well those were the last words that the barkeep said
'Cause Stag put four holes in his mother****ing head

Just then in came a broad called Nellie Brown
Was known to make more money than any bitch in town

She struts across the bar, hitching up her skirt
Over to Stagger Lee, she starts to flirt
With Stagger Lee

She saw the barkeep, said, "O God, he can't be dead!"
Stag said, "Well, just count the holes in the mother****er's head"

She said, "You ain't look like you scored in quite a time.
Why not come to my pad? It won't cost you a dime"
Mr. Stagger Lee

"But there's something I have to say before you begin
You'll have to be gone before my man Billy Dilly comes in,
Mr. Stagger Lee"

"I'll stay here till Billy comes in, till time comes to pass
And furthermore I'll **** Billy in his mother****ing ass"
Said Stagger Lee

"I'm a bad mother****er, don't you know
And I'll crawl over fifty good losers just to get one fat boy's *******"
Said Stagger Lee

Just then Billy Dilly rolls in and he says, "You must be
That bad mother****er called Stagger Lee"
Stagger Lee

"Yeah, I'm Stagger Lee and you better get down on your knees
And suck my dick, because If you don't you're gonna be dead"
Said Stagger Lee

Billy dropped down and slobbered on his head
And Stag filled him full of lead
Oh yeah.

I am just getting into nick cave through Dig Lazarus Dig. Fantastic album. I bought a few of his other highly regarded albums, but I am still digesting them. From what I have heard, I just can't get "Hold on to Yourself" and "Midnight Man" out of my head. Fantastic songs.

OP, what albums would you recommend? I am an album guy to the extreme, so I am looking for his best in terms of a complete package album.

IMO, there's a lot of sides to Nick Cave & BS. My personal faves are:
- Murder Ballads, this is all about murder and mayhem which is very synonym to Nick Cave during the "mid years". I loved this album because it combines the raw angst of early Cave with the latter flavor. Outright morbid similar to the tone of Your Funeral My Trial

- The Good Son, this is a VERY sweet album with some of the most memorable tracks. It's very poetic and moodily lush

- The Boatman's Call - the VERY soft side of Nick Cave. The tone is slow and deep. Some said this is the turning point for Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - the point of maturity and evolution where Mr. Cave mellowed down on the angst and became ever more poetic

- Nocturama - balanced somewhere between The Boatman's Call and Henry's Dream. It's hard to swallow at first but I find myself spinning them a lot lately

- Live Seeds - a MUST! captured the vibe and spirit of early Cave

In short, if you find yourself liking the Nick Cave sound, it is very difficult not to like any of his albums. They can be very raw and refined at the same time and there's no pretense in Nick Cave singing

Thanks for the info. I guess to separate some front runners out, are there any of the albums that you suggested that are particularly good recordings? I'll probably end up getting all of them eventually because I really like the 3 albums I have heard anyway.

I would define the following as Audiophile Quality CDs:
- Murder Ballads
- Let Love In
- Nocturama
* Most later releases after The Boatman's Call are equally good.

Unfortunately, the recording/mastering quality of some of the earlier Caves are not as good. From Her To Eternity is tiny sounding and I have to work my amp quite a bit to get them sing properly. The Good Son & Your Funeral My Trial requires same treatment as well - need to beef the volume pot quite a bit. But once you are there they sing quite sweetly.

Cool. Thanks for the info. I look forward to getting some of those. Nick Cave has invaded by brain lately so I am going to just give up and buy a bunch of his albums.

This is tough, Nick Cave is brilliant.
Albums that one can not live without:
1. No More Shall We Part (2001)
2. Tender Prey (1988)
3. Let Love in (1994)

Favorite songs (random list picked from his singles, there really are too many to list!):
1. No More Shall We Part (2001)
2. I Sat Sadly by Her Side (2001)
3. Do You Love Me? (1994)
4. In the Ghetto (1984) (Killer cover!)
5. Weeping Song (1990)
6. We Call Upon the Author (2008) (Not a single but still a favorite)

Been a long time Nick Cave fan, ever since I played the Birthday Party's first single back in 1979/1980 on a college radio station up in Amherst Mass. I was blown away.
Caught the Birthday Party live several times, in the early eighties, the best show in a little club in Philadelphia called the East Side Club. Also saw Nick Cave with the seeds sometime after he went solo. Great shows all.

thanks OP for bringing back some memories!

I have four Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds CDs coming in next week - that should make my entire Caves collection near to 70%. A couple more months and I am sure they will be 100%

My top three:

1. The Mercy seat.
2. And No More Shall we Part
3. Henry Lee

A great artist for sure. I don't think he has a albums which aren't worth picking up.

It's way too hard to narrow it down to 3 tracks when you've collected and listened to all of the albums since their initial release, but I'll give it a go anyway...

1. I Let Love In
2. Cabin Fever!
3. Where Do We Go Now but Nowhere?

Interestingly, someone on Head-Fi has some Nick Cave CDs for sale
