linux+av710 period time - placebo?

I was having troubles (year ago?) with linux and chaintech av 710. It wasn't playing smooth. Then I set xmms alsa plugin setting "period time(ms)" from original 50 to 47 and it playd good.
Now It is plaing good with 50ms too, but It sounds more clear if its 47ms. Is it placebo? Any coders here?
