Listened: S4 Active, Note 3, S3, Optimus G Pro and G2.

The G2 fared the worse along with the wolfson s3 (too much hiss).

What music app did you use? My Wolfson S3 has as close to no hiss as I have ever experienced. The Samsung app is noisy as hell, especially with eq or sound fields.

It hissed with my UM3x and SE530. When you pause the playback you can hear a distinct hiss that stops a few seconds after pausing the playback as the amp shuts down.

The good news is that the 2013 Android handsets never hiss and have a pitch black background.

The Note 3 and the S4 Active with the UM3x sounded phenomenal!

Optimism is the depth of technical ignorance

After reading the mini review and reply's I must say that my LG G2 has the worst audio playback quality I have heard for the last 10 years at least.

I am wondering which app should be used for the best results for playback.
I used the following headphones: LG's own (just to check), Senheisser px-100 and the Beyerdynamic DT 911. These headphones work fine on my Cowon D2.

The LG app sounded like crap to me. Try Poweramp and Neutron -- much better. I still preferred my I9300 though.

Unfortunately, I cannot take seriously any attempt at a 192/24 capable phone (or DAP) that deliberately omits memory expansion and only provides 32gb onboard memory.

I have owned several iPhone/ipad's over the years and was using a Nokia 920 but decided to try the LG G2 out and so far I like the sound with the stock app a lot. Not sure what everyone's complaint is? The sound quality is better than my Nokia and at least on par with the iPhone. I like that it nicely splits the signature of the above mentioned devices, having a bit brighter signature than the iPhone but but without the midrange suckout I notice in the Nokia 920. I will try these other music apps to see if they are a further improvement.

I personally won't be using FLAC on the device though as I value the ability to have a good selection of music and apps and the 32GB limitation is to much. But coming from phones that all had a similar limitation I am not as bothered by this as those of you used to having expansion capabilities.

Hi guys, invading this thread!

I'll soon be changing my phone (currently own an iPhone 5.... I want more).

I want to jump into the 24bit-192khz able DAP and of course on the go I only listen music on my smartphone. So I did check the LG G2, the Galaxy Note 3 (dang this thing is big), the Sony Xperia Z1 too (it can play 16 bit only, what a let down). No Galaxy S4 for me.

Finally, sound wise only, which one would you advise me to get?

Is the LG G2 a good steap ahead of my i5? How does it sounds compared to the Galaxy Note 3? The Z1 does have the same Qualcomm chip than the others, no "Walkman" chip if I recall?

I've seen reviews outside of Head-Fi showing a big disappointment about the G2's sound quality. I just want to pick the best one about sound quality.

The G2 sound was disappointing for me; I returned mine. Pretty much everything else was stunning though.

You did return it? Damn :/ How would you compare it against iDevices sound? I might go the Note or Sony way if it doesn't sound better than an i5.

I don't have Apple. Compared to my old Wolfson GS3, it really was not close to my ears. Seems like different people have different results with different headphones though. I don't know what I would buy if I had to today. There are issues with Wolfson GS4. Probably iphone, I guess. I really don't like tiny screen though. The big Apple audio disadvantage for me though is no aptX bluetooth. I have got to where I use wireless at the gym.

WhatTheHiFi reviews said G2 was pale compared to new iphone.

Ok, thank you for your input :)

I thought iPhone was stacked stock with aptX though? My in-car system does have it and my i5 works flawlessly with really loud sound, no distorsion and big bass too. The iPhone itself does transmit the signal well, it might be the receiver here that needs to be aptX-able IMO.

BTW I've seen an interesting thread on xda forums today about the G2, while I was looking for almost all the "top end almost audiophile" smartphones (did take me lot of time haha).
About the mod available on xda, users are amazed by how it improves a lot SQ for both headphone jack and speaker (your volume level goes from 80% stock to 40-50%), plus it brings better soundstage, clearer sound signature. The maker of this mod does actually have an iPhone 4S so he tested them both. It is compatible with Viper, but "loudness" feature must be turned Off in Viper (you might know better than me what this is about).

About other smartphones, unless you absolutely want 4G, you will be interested by the Vivo Xplay (or just wait for Vivo Xplay 3S, it will include 4G and so much more), Oppo N1 and Meizu MX3. The Vivo Xplay 3S might also have a brother to stack against the Oppo N1, so smaller than the 3S but with a better camera and I hope the same CS and OPA audio chips.

I was tickled a lot by the Vivo haha, but I don't know if I will have the patience to wait until December or January to see what comes out.

It is possible to hook up an amp through the USB of the G2?
