lets say, between these two...bose tri port or sony mdr-v600...

You can do better than either the Triports or the V600s by getting a pair of Senn HD201s for $20. And just to show you I have the best of intentions, moving up the line you can get the Grado SR60s ($70), Sony V6/7506 -- NOT the V600 -- ($100 or less), Senn HD555 ($100 -$150), just for starters. I'm not even a Sony or Bose basher -- I own some Bose and some Sony equipment -- but the Triports and V600s are truly sub-par gear in that they are overpriced for their sound quality and are not very durable. Just to be balanced, the Triports are comfortable and isolate well.

Good luck!!!

say ya got some limburger cheese, yeah it stinks but it's pricey. and let's say ya got some laughing cow pimento cubes. which one is good for a wedding reception, and which is good for a first date appetizer tray?

answer - none of the above! get some decent cheese, or at least some nice plain old non-offensive Cheddar!

edit - steve's suggestions above are solid! long live the cheese!

NOOO BOSE TRIPORTS...Some people may be just going by hear say when they tell you such...but I have firsthand experience...believe me...NO TRIPORTS...

You might be very much well off saving 80 dollars and getting the Grado SR60. Or even shopping around the In Ear Monitor market (IEM).

I'm no expert but I went and listened to a pair of triports today, they have to be one of the most dissapointing headphones I've heard, for that much money and the name, I expected more. I would go with the V600s.

koss UR40 (EDIT.. and KSC75) completely destroys either of them. For that much $$$ add a PA2V2.

I can't recommend either of those. At least the V600 is durable though.

I see what you're getting at... you want a headphone NOW.

Unfortunately, there's just not much to choose from on standard Circuit City /
Best Buy / Target circuit.

If you can find a Guitar Center near you, you can pick up a pair of the all-time pro-audio classic Sony MDR-7506 for $100. Every headphone afficianado should have a V6 or a 7506, IMHO. (The V6 and 7506 are the same, except for cosmetic differences.)

You most likely would have to get a pair of Grado SR60s or Senn HD555s off of the net... either would be a sterling purchase decision, IMHO. You could try headphone.com or do a google/froogle search for less reliable service but a lower price. Ultimately, I suspect the HD555s would suit your needs best because it's lightweight and comfortable and the sound is mainstream hi-fi and easy on the ears.

Circuit city has the KSC75
BB has the UR40, although its overpriced there at ~$40.

the Triport is typically $150 for that much dough you can get any of the following:
MS1, SR60/80/125/225(used)
K240s + mint, cmoy, PA2V2, govibe, little dot micro
MDRV6
HD280
Eggo D66
A500
KSC75/50/55
porta/sporta-pro, KSC35

All of which pound the living snot outta' the bose for the $$$.

note I didn't recommend the DT770, HD580 or K501 because their amplification requirements quickly knock you into the ~$200-$300 ballpark. Although the cans themselves can be found for ~$150, less used.

K240s + govibe would be my pick of the bunch. If youre budget is tighter then KSC75 + govibe.

Good Luck!! try and get out and demo... researching and listening for yourself is half the fun.

I think tweeter carries some Senneheiser - but I wouldn't bet my life on it. I asked them about graods 2 years ago when I got into this and they actually knew what I was talking about. They don't carry it though. The guy offered me a sennheiser instead.

HD 555 is circumaural and quite comfortable. I think it sounds better than the ATH or Sony cans you mentioned because it's an open-air design. Generally just better extension and more powerful.
