Now with more ad700 and ad900 owners, can someone actually do a comparison of both and tell all the interested headfiers what genres each shine at and whether the ad900 is an upgrade in every way or whether they sound different from each other.

I have done the AD700 and AD900 comparison before, the short answer is that it's the same as the SR225 vs SR325 argument: the AD900 is essentially more of the ATH sound in them than the AD700: more coloration, even bigger soundstage, more clarity and resolution. The problem is, I find that it has too much of the ATH sound in them, just like how the SR325 has too much of the Grado sound in them, and I couldn't stand how colored and unnatural the AD900 is. So to me the AD700 is the better phone.

Can I toss in AD1000 for the comparison? From Ad700 to AD900, the price almost double and same to AD900 to AD1000. Is the price justifiable?

go ahead, it makes it all clearer when all the ad's are compared because i've had the ad2000s before myself

How does this work with models past AD900 or SR325?

models like the ATH-AD2000 or.. other higher models.. of both the ATH or grado line.

Discussion of other brands would be appreciated too.

I know what he means by the grado comparison... but lets keep the topic with the ad series. I dont want this to turn into another useless thread with no direction. analogies like the one scytheavatar made are welcome though since hes using it to make a point.

As for the AD1000, I didn't test it as much as the other Audio Technica, but I feel about it the same way I feel about the D5000; it's a half-****ed attempt from Audio Technica. Like they aimed for something better than the AD700 and AD900 but came short in many ways. Think of it as a slightly better AD700 with a more MS1-like mids and a bit of treble roll-off. Very difficult to justify getting it.

ad2k has a treble rolloff too. hmm these ad700s are getting interesting. im putting up my sextett mp for trade on the forums for an ad700

I'm considering an AD900 myself if I decide to sell the K701. If only there were someone here with all three phones (or at least with the K701 and AD900)...

lucky,
I thought you love those k701s, why the chance of selling them? are you getting tired of the lower highs that give it a cold sound?

AD900 doesn't have a bigger soundstage than AD700. Very few things at this price point have a larger soundstage than AD700.

AD900 does have better, stronger bass though.

I do love them (and the highs are nice :O), but right now, they just don't sound that different from the AD700 to me, at least on my current gear. They look nicer, no argument there, but I can't tell if the slight differences I heard are actually there or if it's just me trying to make them sound different. I feel kind of silly switching phones back and forth trying to hear something to justify keeping the K701.

Guess we are different then. I like to collect cans, especially good vintage cans.
