Looking for another set of headphones with a bit of rolled off highs for music that sometimes can benefit from such a headphone. Is K271MKII suitable for my purpose or is there another headphone that is smooth sounding with a bit of rolled off treble that is better and not too expensive?

NO. I have open DT990pro already though so thought I would try closed maybe. I want a smooth sounding headphone and I know HD650 would fit the bill but they cost too much IMO. How about AD700? I can get AD700 for ok CAD price. I have access to AKG K240MKII or K42HD and Denon DN-HP1000 also.

I listen to those genres with velour pads, but if you already have DT990s, why don't you listen to punk and grunge with them?

I haven't really listen to all phones mentioned here, but my Beyerdynamics DT250 (250 ohm version) sounds like it might be match for you. Powerful bass, decent mids, a bit rolled of high-end. In my ears, they sound good for rock music.

Umm, i do love mine. Not so sure about punk and grunge though. I keep seeing Sinatra doing Jane's said.

Jane said by Jane's Addiction?

I went and ordered the AKG K271MKII this morning as I wanted to try something different other than beyerdynamic. Need another headphone for guitar practice anyway.

These headphones come with both velour and pleather pads and two types of cable too. Just not sure if I should have gone with K242HD or these though. The K242HD are semi open so may have been more comfortable in hot weather and have a wider soundstage. The K271MKII cost about $40.00 CAD more though so I am expecting they are a bit better, but that is not a given.

Cheers,

I know you said HD650 were too expensive. But you want a headphone where you don't need to use EQ to decrease the treble, HD650 should be kept in mind. I love it, and I am listening to Janes Addiction's Jane Says right now.

Maybe look for the HD650 used? They have been selling low since you can buy them new for only $320 shipped.

Not in Canada. NCIX just started carrying HD600 and they want $599.99 just for those. HD650 is usually $650.00 CAD up here. I know HD650 are good but they are not *that* good. Some people like DT880/990 better than HD650 and they cost half that price. But, yes, one day I will probably have HD650 in my possession too when I find a good deal on them. Just not used though, I don't like buying used audio gear as I like the smell of brand new audio gear better .

In my opinion the K271 is way to polite and refined to sound right with punk rock.
A better option would be the MB Quart QP250/ German Maestro GMP250.
They have slightly rolled off highs, but much better PRaT than the K271.
The GMP250 is my favorite rock can.

I never considered that headphone because they are very hard to acquire in Canada. I canceled my order on K271 yesterday after doing more research on them and today ordered ATH M-50 as that seems like a headphone that will be what I am looking for too. I will see next week when they arrive.
