Apparently I have a big and sensitive head. I was not aware of this until I started auditioning new headphones. I have a Sennheiser PX 200 which I enjoy, but I am getting bored with it. I can use it for hours at a time.

I have tried the SR 60 and HD580 both which kill my ears/head. I have tried bending the headband/book stretching, etc, but I just can't use headphones for more than a few minutes without pain. I really enjoy the sound of the HD 580.

I am thinking either the DT880 or K501 would be a good choice as far as comfort is concerned. What do you think? Or other suggestions.

Thanks.

For comfort, DT880 is the winner. There is very little pressure exerted by the pads and the pads are very soft and comfy. I only tried the K501 for a few minutes, but if I remember correctly, they do apply some pressure.

The AKGs don't clamp hardly at all. They are very comfortable headphones. Although if you like the sound of the HD580 I wouldn't recommend the 501s. They are seriously lacking in bass. I would go for the 601 or 701 instead. The DT880s are also very comfortable but they do clamp a little (not as much as the senns though). I would also recommend them over the 501s soundwise.

DT880 has less clamp, but K501 doesn't have much either. Like you, I find the HD580 to be very uncomfortable, but have no trouble with either DT880 or K501.

P.S. DT880 sounds significantly better to my ears, but K501 is definitely no slouch.

I remember the 880's having more initial clamp, but I loosened my 880's enough to the point that I don't notice them at all.
