Are Lenovo headphone jacks decent in general? better than most? Is there a general consensus on the best sounding laptop headphone jack? I am particularly looking at the budget model y410

That would depend on the on-board soundcard. Not much on the laptop itself. Any brand laptop can sound decent if it has a decent on-board soundcard. From what I vaguely remember, I think the Realtek sounds decent, Intel sounds crap cos I have it, Sigmatel is also subpar....those are just a few I can think of right now.

I've tried the headphone out on my T61 and I could hear the hard drive as it was being accessed and other inner-sounds of my laptop. So to answer your question: no.
