Am I putting my headphones at risk if I leave my headphones plugged into my mixing board while turning it on and off? To be clear, when I do this there isn't a loud source signal going through the mixer and the initial no-load signal jump isn't loud, but it's still a signal rush.

Depends if you the amp in your mixer has a muting relay. However, my advice would be to always follow these steps:

1. Turn the volume down
2. Unplug headphones
3. Turn off mixer/amp

Even though my amp has a muting relay built-in I still get that annoying and unsatisfying pop or click in my headphones. If you don't have a muting relay and depending on how much power the amp in your mixer is outputting you could damage/break the drivers due to excessive current.
