Post title says it all. On Android every phone defaults to best effort and forcing 660 or 990 needs to be done every time you connect and does not always work when you do. There is also lots of evidfence out there that at the lower 330 rate LDAC is comparable or worse than even SBC or AAC.

Is there any way to tell what bitrate LDAC chooses in best effort? I am not talking specialist kit but more for example if I have Sony M5s connected to my Samsung S22.

Have you tried XDA? The Android folks might know of something.

Go to system : developer options in the settings (assuming you've activated it) and scroll down to the USB part and it shows what the current Bluetooth audio is being sent as. You may need to be sending to your device to see the settings. My Pixel 6 pro to a LDAC receiver stays locked to 990 kbps, but they're usually both on my person so no real range involved.

Developer settings will only tell you what LDAC setting is active, it will not tell you the bitrate if best effort is selected.
