LD MK III scratch noise

M8083 is my current favorite now. I got 2 pairs (4 tubes) for $15 with $10 shipping. Extremely good value. M8083 will light up brightly when you turn it on, which is interesting to watch. Mine is a little bit microphonic but it only tinkles when I cause some physical vibration to LD (unplug phone or cable bump to the case).

I'm having some issues with my newly received LD MK III. It is outputting pretty bad scratchy noises on the left channel. If I pull the headphone plug 1/8" out, the left channel sounds fine with no background noise, and the right channel is silent.

I swapped the stock tubes from left to right and vice versa, but the left channel is still not working right. I've emailed David, but does anyone have a possible suggestion towards the problem? I don't think it's caused by the tubes.

Thanks,

Ming

i don't quite understand how you have it setup. what kind of headphones are you using? are you using a 1/8" to 1/4" adapter? have you tested it out with another headphone? do you mean when you pull the plug out slightly it sounds fine?

I have my Sennisher HD650 connected to the amp. If you pull the plug out partially, I think it disconnects the left channel, and sends the right channel information to the left.

Eitherway, I sent a couple emails back and fourth with David, and figured I have a bad amp. It's going back today, and I'm probably going to take a full refund.

I don't think it's a bad amp. The design of the plug on a headphone is called a TRS plug. This stands for Tip Ring Sleeve. The tip is the left channel, then ring is the right channel, and the sleeve is the ground. So when you partially pull out the headphones, the tip connects to the point where the ring would normally connect, thus switching the channels. How about you leave it plugged in all the way :P.

If I leave it plugged in all the way, the left channel only puts out loud scratchy noise, no music even with the volume turned all the way down. The right channel works OK with the plug in all the way.

I've sent the amp back already. David is going to give me a full refund. Now I just need to figure out what I want to do for an amp.

Hi,

I recently bought a Little Dot MK III and I sometimes hear a small scratching noise ( like when you are in seeking a radio channel ) on the right side. It is intermittent and sometimes it's pure silence. I can only hear it when the music is less loud or there is a silent passage. If i disconnect the source it is still there, so it's not the problem. I can hear the sound even if the volume is at 0.

Is it because of a bad tube ? If so, is it the big ones or the little ones ? Does it need more burn-in ?

I try to find when it does this, but it seems really random. I let my amp on for about 30 min before starting listening to it.

I have the same problem after about 2 years listening. I guess it is loose connection of the lead of the tubes. I don't know for sure because sometimes it persists even if I get them out and plugin.

so does your m8083 have "large shield" or "small shield" or others?

"large shield" ones seems to be more expensive.
