If by school you mean college. most of them have deals to get cheaper Dells/IBMs. I have a IBM T42 and bought an extedned warranty for it. I was not in the city of original purchase and my Fan broke.

THey came next day and fixxed the part. Best damn service ever.

Yeah i had good experience with Dell. I own the Dimension 2100, Inspiron 1100, and the Inspiron 600m. The 2100 is about 4 years old and its still kicken, slow but great for email and internet. The worst Dell I have is the 1100 notebook, the plastic is pretty flimsy, it pops and make noise when you left the screen up. The 600m has a better build quility.

One thing with Dell notebooks is that the keyboard is, um i dunno pretty flimsy looking. Some people hate Dell notebooks for that but others like the light keys because they are easy to press and you can maybe type faster.

Can the extended warranty be purchased later on (as in before the 1st year of warranty expires) or is it only available at the date of purchase?

I don't know for certain, but most times you can buy the extended warranty at any time before your warranty expeires. That's where companies make a lot of their money, I'm sure they won't turn down much of it.
