What's the Pros and Cons of using the cd/dvd player in your laptop as a cd player/transport?

Sometime my NAS goes on the fritz and I have to use my CD play to listen to my music. Is this optimal or should I get a dedicated CD transport for these duties?

I use the drive sometimes and the only downside might be how loud the drive is.  When outputting to dac and amp, it's basically just a transport.  I use it with Foobar and it retrieves track listing etc...
