No-one cares what your server does. This isn't going to be a server. The guy deserves a robust computer, well in his price range, without crippling himself from your advise.

So cheap huh? That's why the memory I bought less than a year ago has almost doubled in price along with several other kits I was watching? I suggested he got a high density stick so he could get another down the road if he needed it. Cheap up front, less power usage and future upgrade-ability, how can you argue with that?

Nobody may care about my server but people may care to know that Windows 7 doesn't require large amounts of RAM. This guy was asking for advice, someone with obviously low technical knowledge gave generic "buy the most expensive" type of opinion which I am out to bust. The OP isn't looking for a high-end gaming system, just a way to browse the internet and listen to music along with a couple other basic tasks. Of course new laptops will come with 3 and 4GB, it's all a way of pushing the latest and greatest technology on people that the majority of average users don't need.

Way to flame instead of inform. In the interest of the OP, I won't view the thread again in case Hybrys tries to say I'm wrong again.

Please view the thread again lol, you sound like you know what your talking about and i value your opinion. thanks for the tips. I didnt figure it really needed that much ram as like i said im running 2 gigs on my desktop and have many many things open at one time usually, with about 12 on average tabs open in my browser and right now im at 63% used. I cant see needing more then 3 gigs even on win 7 to do what im looking to do. Im running vista on my home rig dont really know how the two compare.

"No. It's not "4g", it's 4GB"

That's why I took that attitude. And RAM isn't just for gaming, it's for everything, improves overall load times and futureproofs you.

PS: Did you even look at the laptop I linked in? There are four others between $300-500 with a 15.6" screen with 2GB DDR2. Of which three are more expensive, with a worse processors, and one is a refurb with a tiny HDD, and 2x1GB installed. (Avoiding Core 2 Solos, or you'll really find your computer sluggish.)

You came in here and offered pompous advise with no backing OR links. And, yeah, I've been a computer technician for 7 years. Buying and building better for cheaper for people for a long time. And the top two things you can inch up for cheap are RAM and Processor.

You weren't the one that said that, I don't see why you're getting bent out of shape. Personally, I wouldn't trust someone's advice when they don't know the proper terminology. I know RAM isn't just for gaming, that's pretty obvious. Gaming is intensive, not like web-browsing it was an example. The OP has said that he/she wouldn't even use 4GB of RAM so why waste the money on it, if it comes with the laptop in your price range sure but don't seek a laptop with it. If you're not even using 2GB of RAM then 4GB wouldn't improve load times, but it would future-proof you. Why is it always an amount of ram, why is it never speed? I've found OEM laptops don't always come with the fastest RAM that the motherboard will support, you could get higher density and a faster speed.

I did not look at laptops linked in this thread since I'm not in the market for one, I was simply commenting on someone else's advice. Nobody cares about you being a computer technician (just like nobody cares about me running a Windows 7 computer on 512MB of ram
biggrin.gif
). I maintain and build computers as well and I know that RAM is crucial but that doesn't mean everybody should max out their computers or buy un-necessary amounts especially in a portable environment where running a 2nd stick of RAM that doesn't get used is just wasting battery life (not much but every bit counts).

You say I come in with no backing or links... where's yours?

I'm not out to prove anything and frankly I know what I know from personal experience and I don't really have links for that. Backing? Well, everyone should take everything said on the internet with a grain of salt, including mine and your advice.

All in all, I hope the OP walks away with knowledge to make a more informed decision.
