Hey guys, finally have something to post after a period of audiophile hibernation. Been doing research on a good 2.1 setup for my room at college and the first shipment was a pair of KRK Rokit 6 active monitors:
On the 28th, as a birthday present to myself, used my summer work money to order an Audio-gd FUN version A (USB). After all the research I did, the FUN seemed like the best overall pick for my needs.
Right now I only have a Creative X-fi driving my computer audio setup, which then goes to that little CI VHP1 you see under my monitor, with the loop out feeding the KRKs. Not an optimal setup, but a huuuge (beyond words) upgrade from using my netbook as speakers haha. Now let it be known that the physical placement of the KRKs is anything but perfect right now. They are sitting straight on my desk, no angle, no dampening, too close together, surrounded by objects, you get the idea. I really dont have much room to work with though and I got to put up with my inner audiophile bickering at me. These speakers sound so good though that I'm still in a state of bliss that silences any room complaints I have.
So on to my real question. How am I going to set up Windows 7 for this new setup? I've spent many mental minutes contemplating if I should only use the FUN + KRKs for foobar, and leave the X-fi as the default audio device. But I had a revelation today as I was using ExtensionFM (awesome chrome plugin for managing music from blogs and soundcloud). I need these speakers to handle all audio. Are there any concerns I should have with this? Basically I was just trying to avoid and stupid windows noises coming through while playing music, or any unnecessary windows audio processing. But I guess I may just have to put up with my inner audiophile again...does anyone have any tips/understanding/ideas/suggestions?
With time I will:
- make all my own audio cables (cheap guitar center cables now, parts for cables on way)
- upgrade power cables slowly (2 for KRKs then 1 for FUN)
- consider speaker repositioning to another wall and get some stands (looking for angeled foam until then)
- get a dedicated USB -> Digital converter (hiface maybe) and exchange the USB for the audio-gd BNC board (way down the road)
- buy the KRK K10s Sub (putt off for a while bc the bass from the monitors alone is working quite well in room)
