I picked Plugs up on a whim before taking an airplane trip, I'm fifteen so I didn't really have the budget for Etymotics or Shures or anything.
Naturally, they sounded horrible, even to my relatively untrained ears.
However, I found this page of mods:
http://headwize2.powerpill.org/proje...=cmoy4_prj.htm
and the difference is freaking amazing.
For 5 bucks more and a little work they are really really good for the price, trouncing any other in-ear phones I've tried.
Furthermore, I auditioned Shure E2Cs, and although those are really good, I'd have to say these provide almost 80% of the quality!
20 dollars and a little handiwork, and great phones.
If you're skeptical maybe you should try it out, even if you already own Etymotics or Shures.

I have modded Plugs (the old kind with fixed tubes and a mute button) and I'd say they're around 50-60% of my ER-4S. Even with mods, my Plugs are extremely bass heavy and a bit thick sounding. They don't sound nearly as natural or refined as the Etys, but they provide far more bass and sound ok with certain types of music or low quality sources. They also isolate just as well as the Etys. I would easily recommend them to somebody who wants portable isolating phones, likes bass, and doesn't want to spend much.

I find the modded Koss's very handy as well. I don't know what Koss was thinking with those original foamies, they are almost unwearable. With the mods though they are quite ok. They are now my 'traveling headphones'. Great isolation and cheap. Sound quite ok too, especially when away from the home rig for a while.

I use the same mod also. Didn't like the insertion process involved with foamies so I got the tri-flanged 'Pro Eartips' as well. Much easier to use!

Another popular method (in Japan) to mod the Plug is to use EX71 ear tip. To do this, take the original formie and overlay vinyl tube (i.e. electrical connector sleeve) onto original tube, and set EX71 ear tip on it. If you can't find vinyl tube that fits, substitute with electrical tape and wrap around original tube to appropriate thickness. E2 silicon tip is also usable.
I'm using electrical tape plus E2 small tip and result is fine. Bass is less boomy so mid and high became clearer. Also easy to put into ears.

Here's how it looks.
