Yes the pads are thicker in the back. The problem is that when you put them on they will compress and the grills will be touching your ears or be very close to them. So in the end not much of a benefit.

I was busy last week and did not post anything. It would appear that I was correct in saying that they have a cheap feel to them. The left cup came off from the headband when I was putting them on. The pivots are plastic and thin.

I apologize for not posting sooner however I been having health problems.
I want to thank Koss for getting a replacement out to me soon. With that being said, I’ll not be continuing with the review. I no longer have the SP540.
For those who are still wondering about the sound. The SP540 are very similar to the CAL’s. The base is slightly more forward on the SP540. I believe that is due to the stronger clamping force.
