I got a chance to listen to this phone, one bought in 2002, and running from a 70's Sansui receiver. I was impressed enough to check Ebay, and saw this headphone has been around quite awhile, and the prices very reasonable.

Are they all pretty much the same, or are there certain years to seek out or avoid?

I've got one from between '79-'81.

I still need to get around to replacing the earpads... maybe a recabling job.

Sounds OK, but not fantastic, with hard earpads.

Just got a later model with really good original pads in perfect shape, WOW! Not sure if are the 80 or 81 models, however they are the ones where they swtched the color to black

I think my excitement came from the fact that the later 4AAA have more sensitive drivers that are easier to drive. The 80's version of the 4AAA's sound great on my Marantz 2220b receiver, however the older model 4AAA's sound average on the Marantz receiver, and really blossom on a tube amp rig.
