My old PortaPros stopped playiing sound in the left channel. Wanted to return them, but family threw out the original package, so I just bought a new pair from a well-known local seller.

However, when they arrived, I was quite surprised to see them come in a strange package.

Every single one of my old pairs came in this kind of package:


But this time I got one like this:


This immediately aroused my suspicion. Maybe KOSS changed their box, but I'd rather check it. I mean, this model has an L-curved jack as compared to the old straight jack.

I found an earlier thread on the subject. People were generally saying it's fake, but one last person said they're 100% sure it's legit. Perhaps Head-Fi users back then did not know about the new box, and now it's more known?

So I still don't know what to think. I hope that since then people have learned more about the subject and could clear it up.

tl;dr I got my new PortaPros in a weird black box like the above photo. Real or fake?

I haven't tried it myself, but what about the "limited lifetime warranty" that the Porta Pros have?

Just the other day I saw a whole shelf full of those black boxes at Office Depot. I doubt Office Depot would be selling fakes.

The photo you posted of the new Koss Porta Pro packaging, is the latest packaging for the Koss Porta Pro Classic. The new, all black box should read Koss Porta Pro Classic. As a representative of Koss Stereophones, I can confirm that the Porta Pro headphones that come in the new all black packaging have the L-shapped jack.

I just received a FAKE one as "genuine".
 
There are only two differences, there is no white paper on plug (photo is the original one):

 
 
The infame number "4" on plastic mold (fake one):
