Is it correct for me to assume that the Microdac serves as a usb soundcard in which I can connect a pair of Klipsch speakers? I am thinking about getting this setup for my office. Do I only need an amplifier if I am planning to use headphones?

Yeah, it will work. But once you hear the micro dac through a good headphone amp and phones you won't want to listen the klipschs anymore.
