I've been asked to recommend some computer speakers for use with a notebook computer so that the user can listen to music in his apartment.

I'm looking at the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 THX Certified Personal Speaker System < http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...119-101&depa=0 > for around $160 or the Bose Companion 3 Multimedia Speaker System for about $250 < http://qualitysound.bose.com/compani...uter_index.htm >.

Which of these two would be best? Are there any better options for about the same price? I was thinking maybe a mini hi-fi, with audio-in, for the same price may be just as good, but I'm not sure? Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks.

That 2.1 Klipsh doesnt sound too good for the money. You can get this
http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_g...asterid=651425
and not only is it 5.1 it also sounds better than promedia 2.1 And the bose tho i dont know,I think most likely sucks. These
http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_g...266601&prsrt=1
are very good and these
http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_g...sterid=1542634
are slightly worse satellites and better sub,but the price on kilpsh is always higher than same level creative.I know that you probably dont need 5.1,but unfortunately those multimedia speakers manufacterers put the most work in 5.1 systems and their 2.1 dont sound as good. You might wanna save up some more and get a decent bookshelf pair.

I'd suggest reading some reviews on the Altec Lansing MX5021, and Swan M200's.

The other option would be to put together an older 2 channel integrated amp and a set of budget bookshelves.

I think the Mackie speakers are over budget in this case, but the Swan M200's look like they may be OK.

Hmmm, if your choices above are the only speakers you're taking into consideration, as a Klipsch owner I must reluctantly recommend the Bose. I'd heard them in a best buy and they weren't as crappy as I suspected they would be.

If your choises extend beyond the above mentioned two: stay away from both!

I haven't heard them, but based on asthetics and reviews I would likely purchase a pair of swans if I had the moeny I wasted on my PM 4.1s to spend again.

How do the Swans compare to the MX-5021's?
The Altec's have a big big sub; the Swans are only a 2.0. Do they sound as rounded as the Altecs?
I am deciding between those 2 (In Hawaii either set would be $200) and want a speaker set that I can use for a long, long time. For some reason the Swans seem more classical, like they would get sppreciate in time, while the Altecs seem so commercial, where you can sell it for only half the price in a few months. Anyone heard both of these?

I haven't heard the Swans but I'm a bit worried that they wouldn't have good bass output, but if they are done well they actually may have pretty good bass.

I have a set of Klipsch v.2-400; the predecessors to the 4.1 system, which is, of course, the big brother to the 2.1. The 4.1's sound far better than any Creative Labs speakers I have ever heard - but I have never heard the MegaWorks 550. In fact, I have never heard a single Creative Labs speaker than I could STAND to listen to - much less like. But again, I haven't heard their latest speakers.

I haven't heard the 2.1's but I'm sure it doesn't have the bass of the 4.1 or 5.1 Klipsch system but my speakers are great.

Don't count out the Klipsch. You can find them at most major retailers to audition. Of course, they will attached to simple portable CD player. But that's probably just as good as your going to get out of an average computer anyway.
