Hey guys - sorry quick question/post:

I'm demoing currently a set of my co-workers X10's and....how to put this...:
They are not bass heavy + a little distorted, muddy mids, spikes on the highs (EDIT: OH MY GOD that hurt my ears....listening to Lupe fiasco - the show goes on) and not much of a soundstage (especially when the music kicks in)

On the plus side:
Very light earphones, very elegant and comfortable to some extent.

My question is:
Am I missing something out here? Could it be tips?

It is definitely the fit/tips.  Make sure you are inserting them correctly first...  Follow Etymotics video on how to do this, they seem to have the best one.  Play around with included tips.  Then try others only after you have used included ones.  Try using the Sensaphonics Seal test to ensure that you do have a good seal.

I did so...when i inserted them even deeper, it hurt my ears and more so all the bass disappeared.
Thanks for the feedback guys

So insertion was right, maybe tips would have been better...but couldn't see it getting better no matter what I tried.
Also is it just me, but when i got them out of my ears, i feel a sign of relief, almost like my ears were telling me to get them out? In other words not comfortable?

That means you are putting them in too deeply.  You can also try a bigger tip.  There is a such thing as too deep of insertion, but too shallow is also bad.

What tips are you using?  I *really* like the double-flange Klipsch gels for both isolation and comfort.  VERY nice.

I really like my X10, they have a nice warm sound. I haven't had any problems with distortions. If the highs are too harsh for you, then Comply tips might help.

What source are you using? It could be that the media player has a bad amp, and I find that most eq settings actually distort the sound on many players.

I test drove the X10i's recently and found them just as you described.  I was not impressed at all, especially given the price.  I did like how small and light they were, and love the look, but they went back.  Just tried some Monster Turbine Miles Dave Tributes.  Same thing, back they went.  Next up is the Monster Turbine Pro Golds.

seal wasn't it - when it was too in, the bass wasn't there, when i pulled it out a little bass came back but wasn't anything special - nothing my EX500's couldn't do, put it that way.

In terms of source - no my SGS has good audio hardware, and i've never had troubles with it.
I should try larger tips - will do later i guess...not impressed to be quite honest - even with or without tips...

LOL...  That's a sign of bad fit which leads to poor seal.  The seal isn't tight enough.  Get a bigger tip.

Yeah you probably need a better fit.

Maybe you've been listening too much to your TFTAs, making everything else seem like there's not enough bass
