I understand that in parts of Europe, recipes tend to be given on a weight basis rather than a volume basis like I'm used to here in the US. Furthermore, my German friend informs me that tricked-out digital kitchen scales with tare functions and dietary information and built-in recipes are common kitchen appliances. This sounds like a very nerdy thing to have. Any ideas where I could get such a device?

I have a Salter one that I bought from Sur La Table to replace my dead Terraillon. You should be able to find them at Williams-Sonoma or Amazon.com. Skip the nutrition info mumbo-jumbo, all you want is a basic digital scale with a tare (so you can put a bowl on the scale and pour the ingredients directly into it).

The built-in recipe thing looked really cool, but I don't seem to find anything like that available. In the case where I buy a tare-able scale, all my recipes (by which I mean all my wife's recipes) become obsolete since most of them do not list the weights.
