For half a year now, since I replaced my Rega Planet 2000 CDP with an Apollo (the first <€1000 CDP I can really enjoy) I'v been experimenting in my speakerbased system (Primare A30>Kimber TC> Dynaudio 122)with IC's:
A braided DIY silver/teflon/solid-core with Bulletplugs, a vdHul Patchbay 5, a vdHul the first ultimate, a Blue Jean LC1, an AQ Coral, the supplied rega IC and a Kimber PBJ selfterminated with bullet plugs. The PBJ is despite its very modest price and looks the clear winner.
An enormous spatial soundstage with a wellbalanced tonality, with enough bass quantity and definition and midbass warmth to make music enjoyable, an even tonality to my ears, not artificially detailed at all but and letting through a very satisfying amount of emotion.
A little bit of grain in the treble, forgivable because the mirange and bass are very smooth, just to my taste.
N.B, the PBJ needs some burning in, smoothing the treble not totally but a great deal.
My system, my music, my room, my ears and there's the fact that I own and love Kimber 8TC S-cable, so YMMV, but for me this cable has some real strenghts and no unforgivable faults at its affordable price;
I bought it for €15,- a meter, enough for a set. The bullet plugs where more expensive though, €40,- a set. I've not compared plugs enough to know exactly what they contribute. No doubt it can be bettered in absolute sense, but price/quality-wise its the top.

Funny detail I just stumbled upon; PBJ stands voor PeanutButter&Jam; the cable appearantly first was sold in a sandwichbag to keep the price down (and draw some attention I bet), showing Ray Kimber sure has a sense of humor.
I just realized a set DIY PBJ with decent plugs can be acquired for less then f.i. (Blue Jean ICs plus 15 minutes of soldering) making this an incredible affordable deal easily beating f.i the vdHul the First Ultimate, in my system to my ears.

Well, I've used it now for over a week, and despite it being an old cable, it unexpectedly improved a lot. Very very smooth now, even in the treble, huge soundstage and letting through a lot of emotion.
For me this PBJ/bullet IC is despite its modest price now a genuine why-pay-more product, and my far more expensive AQ&vdHul ICs are doing duty on the tv and the tuner.

Maybe the fact that they're not heavily shielded has something do with it. I had originally ordered the PBJs but they were B/O so I went with Anti-Cable ICs which also have a sound similar to what is described by Dura. I replaced Blue Jeans LC1 with them and noticed an immediate improvement in detail but with a bit more grain in the upper mids. I ordered mine with Neutrik plugs; maybe the optional Eichmanns would eliminate that grain.

I think you might be right, the lack of shielding is probably an important factor.
However, I also have a silver lace (braided solid core silver, teflon isolation) that had an equally large soundstage and a lot of detail but it sounds tonally unbalanced; lack of midbass, too much lower treble. Not smooth. So the copper and/or the AWG does something too.
Those anticables look fragile but very interesting, the bullets must work on them too.
