Recently I had some issues with my computer sound and I've gone through some pretty weird problems trying to fix it all.  I have an Onkyo SE-200PCI LTD sound card with the most-current drivers installed.  I used to have KS working fine through foobar.  I don't know what happened that threw a wrench in the cogs, but it stopped working and started giving me issues after I had switched from the "Immezio 3D Effects" selected to just the standard sound (just turned em to play around with em cuz I hadn't tried them in a while. Requires a computer reboot to switch between turning this setting on and off.)  The error I got was "Unrecoverable playback error: KS output error: error opening device"  Before this, foobar worked fine with the KS enabled.

I've tried turning the 3D effects on/off/different sampling rates.  I've reinstalled my sound drivers.  I've reinstalled the Kernal Streaming component for Foobar. I've messed with all kinds of settings in both Foobar and Control Panel.  I updated foobar to 1.1.7.  For a little while I could get KS working if I used the Resampler (PPHS) DSP set to 48k along with setting the sound card output to 24/48k in Control Panel.  But that was before the driver reinstall and that no longer works.

I've searched all over Google and these forums trying to find a fix and I just don't know what to do from here. Help :(

Running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit - windows update is current
foobar2000 v1.1.7
Kernel Streaming Output 1.2.2
Onkyo SE200-PCI LTD w/ Envy24 driver version 5.12.1.3656 (using RCA out to my tube amp)

As for other options, I got WASAPI to work but I like to be able to listen to my music while doing other things on my computer which may require sound, so that's a no-go for me.  ASIO is not supported for this sound card so that's out.

WASAPI is the logical choice there. KS stopped being recommended as soon as WASAPI surfaced, and even before it displayed incompatibilities with more hardware than it should.

The other option is just running it through DS and be done with it.

But why exactly do you want KS in the first place?

I can live with DS, and that's probably what I'll do.  I just figure if I go through the trouble buying expensive (to me) equipment and getting the right formats/software for my music, there's no reason to spend a little extra time setting it up so my PC plays it as perfectly as possible.

As I said before, WASAPI is not interesting to me because it mutes everything else my PC is doing. I like having music on while I surf the web, talk on Skype, plays video games, maybe even still have music playing during a stupid youtube video of some cat my friend posted.

Mostly it's just really frustrating because I think of myself as decently computer literate and I can't understand why it was working before but now it will not.

The moment you have a second audio stream running, it is no longer bitperfect, be it KS, WASAPI or DS. Like I said before, there are more incompatibilities with KS than it's worth, and running DS isn't exactly an offence to audio in such a critical way. If you find it to be, then you shouldn't be using the same device you use for music playback, for other audio usage simultaneously.

Yeah I'm not really worried about the "integrity of the data stream" or anything. I just remembered things sounding a little.. maybe better seperated would be how I would describe it, with the KS.  Quite possibly placebo, but I figured it was worth asking if someone knew what was up.  Guess I'm back to DS.  Maybe I'll keep WASAPI around for when I just want to do critical listening.

Still, there's something strange about that issue of yours with KS/WASAPI, as resampling on the player to match the system output format should always enable playback. But again, if you want both music and system sound to playback, forget KS, WASAPI and ASIO.
