Well I just decided to dip my feet in linux again, I have in the past had Redhat 7 up for a week didn't care for all the dependancy issues, Then in 2003 I went all out and spent 2 weeks installing a stage 1 Gentoo distro (my gf shut the computer off twice when I left in on overnight to compile

) then Portage update broke it

So on Monday I decided to try linux out again and installed Ubuntu 6.06, then I installed Kbuntu over it from Synaptic, to get KDE up and running. Now I can't decide which GUI I like better, and further more I don't understand if apps written for KDE will work in Gnome and vice Versa, as the apps written for KDE show in my Gnome application menu, and Gnome apps show in my KDE application menu.

I think I like the Gnome interface over KDE, but it seems KDE has some better apps built for it
- IRC Client Konversation
- MP3/Audio Player Amorak
- DVD Playback Kaffeine

But then Gnome has a few things going for it, I prefer the
-evolution email over KDE craptastic mail (thunderbird won't run in KDE for some reason)
-cleaner interface
-synaptic package manager

I like them both, I used gnome but I preferred kde. The reason why I chose gnome was because I installed mandrake on my laptop awhile ago, and for some reason kde didn't have any API support so I couldn't run a battery meter. Gnome had one that worked, and a battery meter was essential for me. Interface and application wise and compatability I preferred to use kde, gnome had some pretty good features as well but after awhile I found that gnome kind of looked old fashioned and started to dislike it.

But over all of them I like IceWM the most! I used enlightenment as well which was pretty cool as well.

I prefer Gnome over KDE but I must admit that KDE has some great apps like Amarok and K3B. I am currently using Xfce, mostly because of my slow computer but I also like it's clean looks and minimalistic style.

Of the two, I've used Gnome more, but I don't use Linux often enough to really have made up my mind. I enjoy the XGL/Compiz effects on Gnome though. And yes, nearly all KDE programs will work on Gnome, and vice-versa. I've got Amarok on Gnome and it runs great, just doesn't match the themes of the desktop well.

Very true that KDE and Gnome apps can run in a either of the two desktop environments. The first couple of cross-KDE/Gnome apps you install will pull in a lot of the library dependencies needed to build the app that aren't present in the default desktop. Some folks aren't favorable to the incurred bloat but unless your running a low-powered computer, it doesn't matter that much.

I run KDE on the desktop and either KDE or fluxbox on the laptop. fluxbox on the laptop is an attractive, minimalist window environment but is a bit of a bear to set-up. I've also used Gnome as it is the default in an Ubuntu install but didn't stick with Ubuntu so Gnome went out with it. My preferred distro is Gentoo. I've found in linux that you can make almost anything work with almost anything but this requires some effort as the installs are not as automatic as in the Windows (nee Wally-) world.

but it was close. I prefer nautilus to konqueror, but I preferred just about everything else about KDE (particularly amarok).

On my laptop (which is older and slower), I installed Xubuntu (XFCE). I really like the leaner environment, but it took a lot more effort to get it tweaked the way I like it. I also occasionally have problems with firefox under Xubuntu--but nothing too annoying yet.

If you have a decent processor and plenty of hard drive space, you should install several windows managers and test drive them over an extended period of time.

I too am a KDE fan. GNOME's just a little too awkward for me.

Being a long time redhat user, I am use to gnome. However, KDE is great and I encourage others to use KDE. I think QT, which drives KDE, seems to be more popular with programmers, especially in the embedded space.

Some people hate them both and use plain' ol x windows with no desktop or window manager.

I used to only use KDE, but after getting settled into Gnome with my old Ubuntu install, I am a convert.

FWIT, you can apt-get most of those KDS programs you speak of, and use them in gnome.
