i'm 5'10", normal torso, 72" armspan, 16" shoulder... using a 10.5ft kayak. what length paddle should I use... and where should I grip it?

everytime I paddle I get a sore shoulder and i also feel alot of workout in the triceps also. is that normal? is there a way to get a more evenly-distributed workout? i didnt incorporate shoudler swing into my paddling.. ill do that next time. any tips or techniques i should know?

here's how to get a good grip on the paddle.

step 1: balance the paddle on your head. (well, not really, but hold it above your head)
step 2: extend your arms straight out horizontally as far as they can go.
step 3: bend elbows 90 degrees up.
step 4: grab paddle without bending arms.

in short, your elbows should make right angles and your uper arms horizontal when you're gripping.

The length of the paddle shouldn't matter all that much.
