wanting a good lasting upgrade, hd800 as impressive as it is gets hot on the ears after sometime whereas as impression has went based on online feedback is slightly warmer and more musical.

can anyone confirm? unsure between the two which to get.

If you like classic music, choose HD800, but if you prefer pop or other vocal music, K872 is a better choice. Of course you need an appropriate amp and dac to drive them.

You're comparing the open Sennheiser HD800 with the closedback AKG K872.
Are you sure those are your options or you mean AKG K812 (which is open as HD800)?
