which one would win in a critical listening match up?

Round 1: Classical music
Round 2: 80s and pop
Round 3: Drum n Bass, techno, and New York house, funk

I just placed an order for the K701 and I feel sick. Maybe I should cancel it and go with the HD650. Decisions...........I like good bass.

Round one: I would give the edge to the HD650, as it's a tried and true classical can!

Round two: Goes to the K701's

Round three
: Would also go to the K701's, as it's more forward presentation will do that music justice!

Round 1: This goes to K701. Great positioning and incredibly wide soundstage makes classical music sound almost too good with them. 650s are good also.

Round 2: This is draw. It really depends on your own taste.

Round 3: This round goes for 650s. After all 650s bass sounded better with bass rich music. K701 has faster and tighter bass but 650s has a larger amount of bass, still in good control.

I chose 650s and haven't regretted it. If you like good bass then you just must hear 650s. Still K701s are great headphones.

You should order them both and then decide which one to keep after you hear them (or keep them both

Round 1: K701, better resolution, more precise positioning, wider soundstage, more controlled bass

Round 2: K701 in general, with harsh recordings HD650 due to softer treble response

Round 3: HD650, stronger bass with more texture and body

If you like good bass confirm your K 701 order... (and then buy a good amp for them).

Best!

Having owned both:

Round 1: Toss up
Round 2: Toss up
Round 3: HD650; Toss Up; HD650

Depending on the aftermarket cable these aren't night and day phones. It really depends what you focus on. In the end I preferred the HD650s with Zu (detail of the AKGs, but with the Senn warmth), but if I didn't add the $200 for the cable I probably would have gone K701. The AKGs are better bang for buck. I knew I wasn't going to keep both (they're close enough - at least compared to Sony, AT, Grado, etc. I couldn't justify both) and out of all the times I've had to choose between two audio items, this one wasn't very painful. They're both very very good. I don't think you should sweat it. Both require substancial power though.

I dont have the 650 ... but I have the 600/ cardas and the k701. I still think I very slightly prefer the senn 600 overall. The 701 has good bass but there is something about the sense of power and dimensionality of the 600 I miss when I use the 701. I have a SS amp on the way and I will see if the 701 performs better with a higher current SS amp. By the way, I owned the 650 in the past .... several actually ..... and I definitely prefer the 600 over the 650 on my tube amps.

are there enough k701 owners or people who have heard both headphones to make a fair comparison yet? i think this poll might be a bit premature as i and i think many others are waiting to receive our new headphones.

and the wait is killing me!

For anyone who has actually compared the two side by side or owns both (I don't know anyone in my area with a 650 any more

), do you find one of the two to sound particularly more congested than the other?
