From all I've read here, these seem to be similarly described, yet rarely compared head-to-head.

From what I gather, I would imagine the HD600 is a little warmer and more colourful than the K701, but I really don't know.

What do people think? I'm thinking of something (down the roaddddd) to complement my HD650s, and the only Grados I would consider are still too expensive...

If you're complementing your Sennheisers, you should go with another brand. I don't have or ever listened to the HD600 but the K701 is a totally different phone in my opinion. It presents music much better when playing very small chamber music, whereas the Senns always seem veiled comparing both.

I just know a lot of people here have either tried both or own both the 650s and 600s and almost uniformly say that neither is better, just different. And if I'm complementing, then different is all I need.

For the K701, I love the look and from the description of the sound, it sounds extremely different from the 650, more analytical and the like. But that's also how the 600 is normally described.

The top tier of Sennheisers are not analytical.

I suggest instead of simply considering cans that sound substantially different than the HD650, that you instead consider this. What do you want the new cans to do for you that the HD650 would not do as well? And, how well would the new cans synergize with your existing equipment (edit: or additional equipment you would be willing to obtain)?

FWIW, I found the HD650 and K701 to be very complementary cans. There was a thread here not too long ago where people wished that they could actually combine the two of them into one so that it would be the perfect can. I have to agree with that sentiment.

The HD650 and HD600 are very similar. The HD650 is a bit darker, smoother, and has stronger bass. The HD600 is more energetic and has less bass emphasis. (Keep in mind, however, that we're talking very fine shades of gray here.)

HD600 and HD650 are cut from the same cloth. If you want something significantly different than the HD650, go with a different brand. The K701 is a good complementary headphone.

There's the "big teutonic triple" K701, HD650 and DT880, which all (in different ways) are exceeding good products. But the HD600 is at least half a class beneath. The mixture doesn't work in comparison, only to be justified as budget solution nowadays. Just my opinion.

But regarded absolutely, still damned good fons, of course.

I think DT880 would be a better complimentary headphone no?

"thinner" sound (as compared to senn's thick warm sound), lots of highs and EXCELLENT for female vocals

The 600 and 650 both have the Sennheiser house sound with only subtle differences. I agree with Karma that the HD650 and K701 are good complimentary cans with very different sounds.

Either the DT880 or K701 would be a fine compliment to the HD650.

I've had all three, mostly at the same time.

FWIW, I sold all three after I heard the HD600, but that's just me.

Same here .... the 880 was to trebly and metallic = sold .... the 650 to bassy and dark = sold .... and the 701 to bass shy and lacking low end punch = sold. I much preferred the 600 and even the 580 in the end.

It's too early to say. I've only had the HD600 for a couple of weeks. My first impression is that I seem to enjoy the music more with the HD600 because it's less dark and seemingly more energetic. It'll take some time for me to declare a verdict here.

I think the K701 is a better a complement to the Senns than the DT880. I found the Beyers to be colder and metallic, as others have said. They're great phones, but I liked the AKGs a lot more.

I would definitely go with the K701s. Although the HD600 and HD650 use different drivers, they are still from the same company and share a similar sound signature. If you want a different set of sound, go for another company!

I prefer the HD600 to both the HD650 and K701 FWIW
