I know these are two different thing, but I'm asking cause I'm going to drive them with my hornet.

The problem is K701 are hard to drive, seeing that I wont get another amp soon, I'm afraid the hornet cant even drive the K701 to even half of its capabilities.

So I got E500+hornet in mind, cause I think I might enjoy it more that the underdriven K701.

Any comments??

Well, what source are you using?
E500 (or pretty much any higher end IEM) has loud hissing with an ipod that may annoy the hell out of you

I'd suggest getting a full size can for home (my fav is K501 for low $, a900's not too shab either) and a cheaper canalphone like the crossroads mylarone x3

i drive my akg 701 with go-vibe 5s with 8620/10 opamps and they are without a doubt the best sounding headphone i have. and i have two stax headphones a grado sr125 and a set of ety er6. when i say best let me qualify that. they have the widest most believable soundstage. they have the most dynamic and convincing percussion. and the detail in the midrange and high end is very clear with good seperation and imaging. ive tried several iems ety er4p, ultimate ears super pro5, so far no iem has sounded a good as any of the big cans i have. i think the only iem that really holds my interest is possibly the ultmate ears ue10 as a possible buy. but i think if sound quality is the ultimate purpose of your headphone a big can is the only way to get it. in ears are great at creating another quiet world to listen to music where that normally wouldn't be possible. i do believe the hornet would be more than adequate to power the 701s based upon the reviews around here, rays amps seem to be some of the best.

^Thank you, I was hoping that someone could convince me back to the K701, I really wanted a full size can. But most people say that K701 sound BAD when underdriven. I want some opinion of those who tried before, driving the K701 with a portable amp, whether it really sounded BAD.

I think the hornet has a High/Low impedance switch that can be used depending on the headphones that you need to drive. The Hornet should be able to drive the k701 pretty well.

I have heard both the E500 and the K701.

At the Head Fest I listened to the K701 through some of the most powerful and expensive setups; no matter what, they still sounded way too airy.

With the E500, they sounded a smidgen too much bass, and indeed there was a high roll-off.

Are the rolled-off highs on e500 even more serious that e4?? The rolled-off in the e4 is quite obvious, but doesnt botter me at all, you wont notice too much of it(on certain tracks) when you're enjoying(not analyzing) your music. Although on some tracks the highs is a bit sibilant.

Oh and I found that the e4 are a bit lacking in bass, a bit more bass just might be better.

K701 way too airy?? Compared to what???

jes for grins, i plugged in my 701's and DT-880 directly into ipod (4g, no mods) and listened to some jazz and rock. The DT880 sounds more listenable, the 701 is pretty anemic bass-wise and in vocals. (NB: this isn't a fair comparison, I've got 3 pairs recabled DT880 vs. the stock cable K701).

I'm pretty happy with ipod straight into E500 and Um-2 and ER-4P (all with the ety ER-4p/4s adapter cable)

I'm using K701's with an SR71 amp with no problems.

In purely a soundwise comparision, most people will prefer K701's over E500's.
