Recently I had the opportunity to compare my K702s with Filburt's K701s. While similar, I found that there were more differences than just the color and cable/jack. IIRC, the diameter of the K702's outer grill is slightly smaller. Also, the K702's headband and earpads are both considerably firmer (placing the K702's drivers slightly farther from the ears). When I listened, I immediately noticed that the K701s had a wider soundstage and more lows, although I thought that the K702s might have a little more sparkle/detail. Unfortunately, there wasn't time for forming any deeper impressions. I do not know if the variations between these are due in part to age differences (roughly three years), or design differences. As a result, from my experience I would say that these headphones are somewhat different models, both in design, and tonality.

Whether the difference in tonality comes uniquely from the difference placement of headband and earpads ? I thought they use the same driver

Softer pads means drivers closer to ears means more bass.

Thats what I think. The pads will conform to the curvature of your cheek/jaw contour. This will definitely bring the drivers closer to the ear. I would argue a difference in burn in time.
