Also, the HD650 were about twice as much as I had in mind to spend on this (especially sans amp)

I'm really looking for specific advice to address:
1) I listen to most of music out of my laptop (almost all mp3)
2) I need closed cans
3) I listen to mostly jazz and some acoustic rock and classical
4) I don't want to spend twice as much on an amp as my phones

Might just be that the 271's don't improve all that much with an amp (although I've read otherwise).

According to basically everybody here: amped cans will always sound better (all else being the same) then unamped.

I'll let you know with my DT770's when I get the amp, but so far they sound great (coming from my previous headphones which admittedly were crap).

Your definitely right about this. I think the more important question is whether spending 150 on an amp to hear a marginal difference if you're playing 128 bit mp3s can be justified if your phones cost the same.

I love playing and listening music, and in most cases, I'd vote for range of choices than spending thousands to listen to a relatively modest collection. I simply don't have the CD's nor plan to spend the money to reinvest in an entirely new collection.

I would rather spend 150 on new mp3s than buy an amp that gives on marginal improvements to my already really good headphones. I guess that kinda makes up my mind. Of course, I am by no means passing judgement on those who wish to spend their money on better gear (both the phones and the amps) to listen to CDs and LPs that they have the right equipment to run. Just a matter of preferences, and I think after enough time on this forum and time spent with different set-ups I've found mine. I'm a happy soundophile (purposely not audiophile)
