I have a pair of K501. I love them for the detail and delicacy. However, they don't have the same "get up and dance" kinda feel to them. The stuff that my KSC35s used to provide.

This is why I ordered a pair of K81DJs. They will mainly be in my portable rig, however I will plug them into my tube amp for fun sometimes.

Now I'm thinking I might pick up a pair of K240S. They seem different enough from the K501, bassy is why I want them. And cheap (relatively) too! Do the K81DJ and K240S sound very similar? Is it worth me getting the K240S?

When you remove the foam pad from the K81DJ, that and K240S are surprisingly similar (with K240S being much better headphone of course) by sound, except the bass is different.

The K240S is "only" ~$40 more than the K81DJ. Of course this is almost twice the price, but still... $40 isn't a big difference.

I guess the size (and drivability maybe?) is what the K81DJ has an advantage over the K240S... for a portable phone.

Should I order the K240S? Grr.. lol. What kind of sound signature do they have?

Do they improve significantly with an amp?

K240S improves a lot with amp, but it works out of portable too. K81DJ is better straight out of portable though. Sound signature is overall groovy. Highs are bit soft (though not as soft as K81DJ), mids are very sweet and bass is bit pronounced. Its not as boomy as in K81DJ though but still quite slow unfortunately. However, when you remover the foam pad from K240S (damn, do AKG degrade all their headphones with thick foam pads?

), highs are brought more forward and bass is bit tightened up. Soundstage isnt anything magnificient though.

I am happy with my K240S, though there are better headphones, perhaps even in same price range, i dunno.

K240M: bad idea as a complement, I'd say, 'cause the K501 seems better in every respect.

K240S: good idea as a complement, I'd claim - still a lot of AKG magic in it, but quite different in terms of sonic balance...

Grados and Senns. HD580 I've been looking at for long, but the time I listened to them, they didn't sound different enough compared to my K501, just more boring. *hides from Senn fanboys*

I almost bought SR225s new for the super low price they were being offered at... but decided to get the K81DJ and save money for other things. Maybe get a pair of Alessandro MS1 since I don't have that much money (thinking of getting cans for ~$100).

Also considering DT770s.

Jahn: She's pretty convincing.
