The K240 studios (600 ohm) are discontinued from what I know. What is the availability on the secondary market, generally speaking? Are they worth searching down vs. getting the newer K240 MKII?

It's up to your taste. They sound quite different.
The new one has more bass, but less detailed. The Monitor has more and better mids, while the MKII has better and more detailed highs, but less of them. The MKIIs are more laid back, while the Monitors are rather flat.

600 ohms Vs 55 ohms.

If you got a power amp, try 600-ohms k240 monsters. I like those old AKGs(k240df/k240m) more than the new ones(k240s/k240mkII).
