Hi,

Is anyone out there using K1000's with a single ended 45 tube amp? Likely suspects would be a Korneff amp or a Yamamoto A-08S.

I would like to try a single ended tube amp with my K1000's. I am looking at a Cary 300SEI which I know will work well but I have always wanted to try a 45 based amp. My only concern is that it only puts out around 2 watts so I am hoping that someone has gone boldly before me and might have some feedback to offer.

Best,

Paul

Thanks for the reply.

It does not look like a very well worn path out there :)

I am thinking about a Tektron amp. It wil take 45's, 2A3's, and 300B's and got a very nice review on 6Moons. Also contemplating a Yamamoto which uses 45's...

Give it a try. The 45 is probably the most transparent tube in existence when used single-ended. As the tubes get bigger they also get mushier (generally speaking). The 45 easily has the output to drive the K1000s but its voltage swing is limited. Should still be enough though.

Have the output transformer wound with a 32 or 64 ohm POWER tap. Compared to the base cost of good iron this is a minor addition. There are a couple 32-ohm full-range audiophile speakers, its not too unrealistic.

As another idea, 4*16ohm taps in various series/parallel combinations gets you 4, 16 and 64 ohm outputs. That should cover most fostex & lowther full range drivers and the K1000 wonderfully.

I suppose this is getting out of the realm of production amps, but considering that many are customizable to order its worth thinking about.

45 SET is "enough" for K1000 with acoustic, vocal, chamber, etc, but runs out of power when cranking with hip-hop, electronica, etc.

I went ahead and ordered the Tektron. I have some 45's and some 2A3's to run in it. I also ordered it with an extra tap for 300 ohms so that I could run my HD650s as well as the K1000s. After my checking account fills back up I may get some 300Bs also... So many tubes, so little time.

Keep an eye on the For Sale area. I will probably be trading tubes and amps for cash soon. Sound familiar :)
