JVC HA-MR77X top of the line JVC x series
Jan 7, 2015 at 9:05 PM Post #61 of 103
The whole dash vs no dash thing seems to be a fabricated tale - not sure where it started but I searched into it and found no answer. So...I asked JVC directly and according to them, there is only and was only ever one model for the HA-MR77X. For some reason, some places list it as discontinued but it is not. Not only that but it is said that the dash version is the 2013 model. According to JVC, this model was only first released in 2013 - there is no 'older' model.

I bought a pair listed in ebay without the dash, and sure enough the pair I got has the dash on the box.

Unless someone can tell me I'm wrong and why, I think this is just a misconception that got blown up.

email of contact and copy paste with reps name or ...

I live in Japan and emailed in Japanese (girlfriend this exact point as the reviews were poor for the discontinued model compared with the newer version) Got no reply.

Dear Mr. xxxxxx,

Thank you for your inquiry; I’m Erasmo, your email care specialist. We value you as a JVC customer and appreciate your affording us the opportunity to be of assistance.

The HA-MR77X were originally released in 2013 and carried over to 2014. Some stores may label it as discontinued however these headphones are still being shipped to certain stores. There’s only one version of the HA-MR77X since their release in 2013.
If we can be of further assistance, please let us know at customerrelations@jvc.com or by phone at 1-800-252-5722. Our hours of operation are Monday through Friday 8AM to 8PM, Saturday 8AM to 5PM or Sunday 9AM to 4:00PM.

Sincerely,

Erasmo

That's what I eventually got from them.
It took a few emails back and forth but each time they essentially said the same thing - no second model, no discontinued model.

I will say the one I have sounds pretty poor - but it could be just the sound I'm not accustomed to.

Do you know where the Dash vs No Dash came from though?
I see it on sites sold either way - usually the No-Dash version says (Discontinued by Manufacturer), but I've seen nothing online to tell me when and why the model was discontinued (if it even was).

I'm not saying it never happened - I'd honestly like to know if its true or not. It just seems to me it's a misconception since I see nothing anywhere telling me exactly why (such as, JVC found something wrong with the driver or cabling or ear wells, etc...).

To be honest, the pair I have are starting to sound better (only small amount of burn in - if even that exists :)).

The sound is still somewhat hollow for some reason but the bass is definitely there (and strong).
I'm going to hang in there with them for awhile longer and see if they don't grow on me.

I have a pair of XB500s that seem a lot more clear - and the bass is...well different.
At first I'd have said the XB500 bass was better - more slamming / thunderous.
But now...I'm not so sure.
I think the XB500 bass is overbearing a bit - still good sound though.
The HA-MR77X...I'd say the bass is less overbearing and just there - like more even across the sound (if that makes sense).

Edit:  Actually I think I hear what you mean by 'echo'. That's the hollow sound I heard at first - and still hear, but its less now... I don't know...hmm. Maybe some more time with them will help (burn in or just getting used to the sound). The XB500s sounded horrendous to me at first actually! I hated them immediately. Now, they're pretty damn good to me - very nice bass and sound under all of it.

The 77 can use a lift at 35 and 55 hz not too much but it makes for quite a slam

I see your dash and raise you a J at the end of it... Not to mention mine was built in 2012... I hope I didn't get the crappy pair.
I bought mine off amazon linked straight form this forum.

Ah...such wonderful customer service in these places...
I guess I could give them the benefit of the doubt and say it's a case of ignorance that they told me those weren't manufactured until 2013.

I'll have to check mine later and see if there's a J.

Thanks for the info though!
We'll get to the bottom of this - I'd like to have a real answer for anyone looking to buy these in the future.

Update:

Man...don't I feel stupid.
Same model - J at the end, made in 2012....
Hm....

Does anyone reading this thread have a model made in 2013?

How do you know yours was built in 2012?

The ones I just bought from amazon also have the 2012 copyright notice, but I dont think that is the manufacture year (and mine has a -E at the end, instead of -J).

I am certain the 77x's were not sold before 2013 -- at the end of 2012 I was looking for bass cans, the XB500 had just been discontinued in Dec2012. The HAM5x's were the closest replacements I could find (that were not too expensive). I bought those in early 2013.
Later that year, HAM55x's were released (which annoyed me a bit as they were a significant improvement over the HAM5x's). The HA-MR77x is the big bro of the HAM55x, and both were released around the same time (mid 2013).

Well...I just don't know.
Seems that maybe it was just released in 2013 even though the manufacture date says 2012.
The regions marking may be the only difference.

I can say the pair I have sounded horrible to me at first, but since have grown on me.
I also know that I had a problem after the first listen with sound leakage out of the bottom of the pads - I had taken one off and had it on wrong - fixed that and it seems a lot better now.

Sometimes they slam so hard though on those drum hits that I wince...it's a lot to take.
