I have both of these and like both very much, however I am not sure which I like better. They both have great detail, however the HJE355 has a bit more warmth. The HJE355 is more efficient at 105 db/mw vs 101 db/mw for the HA-FX40. Both are 16 ohms.  The HJE355 seems to have a bit better build quality, with a strain relief on the ear bud which the HA-Fx40 lacks. The HA-FX40 does seem to have decent build quality, just not as good as the HJE355. The RP-HJE355 has a right angle plug which I prefer vs a straight plug for the HA-FX40. It looks like the RP-HJE355 has a metal enclosure, although I am not sure about this. The enclosue of the HA-FX40 feels very plasticy. I paid $20 each for both of these. Anyone else here who has both of these care to comment on how these compare?

No responses? Why are Panasonic IEMs so unpopular here? Some of them are quite nice, such as the RP-HJE450 which has 12.5mm drivers and strong bass that sounds natural, and the HJE355 with its great detail and clarity. These are also ergonically shaped and fit me so well.

Could be that the HJE355 is new?  There are no reveiws of it on Amazon.com, which is sort of unusual, except for new items.
 
I have the FX-40, and don't care for it as much as the cheaper ($12-15) Phillips SHE3850 -- very balanced and very clear sounding -- the my FX-40 sounds a bit veiled to me, missing some mids.

The HJE-355 is new, but so is the HA-FX40. I think I have had the HJE355 for over a month. The HJE355 has a warmer sound overall and a bit less treble than the HA-FX40.
 
The HA-FX40 needs an extreme amount of burn in. With the burn in the highs get toned down. At first some highs on it were a bit painful.

My FX40 has at least 100 hours on it, but to me it still doesn't sound as good as the Phillips 3850.  Someone suggested that I may have a fake FX40, which is possible buty I bought mine direct from Amazon.com (not a secondary seller).

I love my FX40. Drums and percussion sound fantastic. With so many saying they like the FX40 and relatively few talking up the Panasonic, that should say something without saying anything.

What should it say if they never even heard the Panasonic? I like the warmth of the Panasonic. Both have great detail. I think vocals are a bit better on the HJE355. The build quality of the HJE355 seems a bit better. Overall both are nice to listen to. The HJE355 is also a bit more efficient.

After more comparisons, I decided I prefer the HJE355. Its highs are better behaved, it fits me much better due to its ergonomic shape, and it seems to have better build quality(strain reliefs on the buds, and a right angle plug). The HA-FX40 is good, it just seems to me the HJE355 is  better. I am waiting for JVC and Panasonic to come out with nicely priced upgrades of these.

I bought the cx 300 (original) long time ago and they didn t satisfied me, now I am using the hje 120 that they are not so good, I replaced the tips of the hje 120 with the large sennheiser ones because the one s that cames with they where to much unconfortable for mi ears. Now I am looking for another headphones. I was looking at some panasonic, sony and jvc but I am still undecided. could the hje 355 tips be replaced with the sennheiser ones?

does the hje 355 have warm sounding? I have the experience with the  jvc HA-FX33  that they have to much sharps highs and nothing of mids and lows.  I end up throwing in the garbage

I have a question for you: can either of them be used as a neck strap IEM? Two days ago I got both FX40 and HJE355, and for my music (rock, metal) HJE355 is so much better.
While FX40 are clean and detailed, they cannot compare to HJE355 in the mids. FX40 have V shape frequency response while HJE355 has nice bass, full mids, and great highs. They are not cleaner or detailed than FX40 but for guitar oriented music they work much better.
 
It is similar to situation where I prefer 240S to Q701. Q701 are better technically but are just too boring for guitar driven music while 240S rocks.
Maybe not the best example, because technical gap between HJE355 and FX40 are not nearly the same as the gap between 240S and Q701.
 
Anyhow I would buy FX40 for classic and pop music, for metal and full mids HJE355 are much better

Thanks for this thread. Without it I would just blindly fallow the FX40 hype and miss better IEM(HJE355).
Also so far I liked all of yours suggestions here (JVC S 160, S650, HJE355).
