Just got my HD580 - first impressions (and comparison to K501)

love my HD580s...they matched well with the headphone-out of my Onkyo receiver

Alas, I will be selling all my audio equipment very soon (I over-extended myself). I only have 43 posts here, so I think I need 7 more to sell. Once I'm official I will be getting rid of my HD580s, my Grado SR60s, my PSB speakers, my Onkyo receiver, my stanton turntable, my NAD cd player, and my entire vinyl and cd collection. All of the equipment was bought within the last year, so I kind of bit off more than I could chew.

After this is done, I suppose I'll feel liberated, but right now I'm just sad.

And if your Avatar is an indication of what you're using I'll bet the word silk comes to mind quite often.

Really love the wood in that amp.

That's exactly what I experienced, too. Maybe the sound of the Sennheisers is more 'rounded'

I don't know about rounded. I think I like dynamics... but that much push and pull over time just wears out my ears. Sennheisers aren't as punchy as Grados, and that's both a blessing and a curse I think. Also, having the upper register accentuated a little less can be very pleasant.

Though I just can't approve of the amount of suck the HD650 has in the upper register. I've heard it through just about everything... it's never present as much as I'd like. The HD600 and 580 are more "in your face" with less lower end push. I think that's the key factor in the "veil," you turn the music up for the treble but it's always overpowered by the bass.

Other than hat, has anyone tried to wash the earpads? I've done so with my K501s' pads, but I'm hesitating to expose the Senns' earpads to water, they look so damageable

It is safe to wash the pads. I washed them in the shower because they smelled from the ebay user I bought them from.

I purchased a new pair of the 580s recently and gave them a try with the Headfive...seemed way to dark and I suppose the word veiled comes to mind.
Bought a Musical Fidelity X-CAN v2 used here on the forums for about 160.00 USD. Seems to be a great match that makes the 580s shine and drives them easily (300 ohms). Amp will make a difference , Im a believer.

Currently using a Audio Alchemy Headphone Amp V1.0, a little laid back and dark sounding, and the headphone out stage on my Rotel RA-05 integrated, which is very good, if a little cool sounding.

Waiting for my little beauty to arrive tho ... <sob>

Yup! amp is a requirement, and if you can hear the so called "veil", then your amp is not up to the task of driving the Senn's

Another question... The cables of the HD580s are removable, arent't they?
If they are, how do I get them off? Just pull the connectors until they pop out?
