i am mostly going to be using it with my 4G ipod. so, something portable would be nice. realistically, i'd like to spend no more than $100. also, what accessories will i need? the pocketdock or sik din? thanks in advance.

well, for that price range, i think a cmoy will do just fine, there really isnt much out there in terms of amps under 100, so either a cmoy or mint built to your specs is okay.

Newb question: What's the difference in using an opamp for each channel, rather than the basic cmoy design, which only uses one for both channels? Is there a noticeable difference in sound quality?

It uses one chip but with two op-amps inside.
Separate chips reduce crosstalk.
