AKG K240 headphones - eBay (item 230429693704 end time Jan-27-10 00:41:27 PST)

The price was really low, and the seller says it was in usable condition. It was somewhat of an impulse buy, but $40 is worth it to try out a pair! I think these are the 600 ohm version, so I won't be using my iPod. Will my NuForce uDAC be enough for it?

What should I expect?

EDIT: Perhaps not vintage, but they're an old pair

Lol I was just looking at them but held off, gotta get those RS-1! Your NuForce uDAC probably isn't enough, as it is really made to be a DAC, not a powerful headphone amplifier. It will suffice though. You should save up for a good amp now

I had them few times and I dont think theyre so hard to drive. I was using them with an old Luxman Cd and it sounded quite nice. Moreover K240 are very comfy.

I heard the K240 sounds really good. Better than the K241s.

Thanks for the responses! I guess I will find out when I get them... should be soon - Vegas isn't too far from San Francisco!

I only have the ATH-M50 and the ATH-AD700 to compare them to. It feels good to buy headphones

About 2 weeks ago I've bought new vintage k141 Monitor - 600ohm version, made in 1991 or 1992.

It's my best buy since I've bought staxes! Awesome headphones!!! I'm in love with them! Smooth sound, and definitely the best bass I've ever heard from a headphone - great impact, textured and controlled. The highs are slightly rolled off but I hope burn-in will fix it. I've made a comparison with MS-1 and the AKGs are better in every way - more balanced, smoother sound, more detail and.... much cheaper

As far as I know vintage k240 and k141 share same drivers but the 240s are circumaural and the 141 supra-aural. I prefer the 141s over my K701 - far more fun

You will like k240, I'm sure.

I don't think much of the newer 55ohm model, but those older ones are supposed to be much better. I almost bought them also, but passed since I have the 240DF. You got a hell of a good deal. The 240DF is awesome...but less bass than the 240M. They're not nearly as hard to drive as I thought they would be. Enjoy!

Love my 140's, but they're a beast to power properly. Sound decent out of my laptop, but flat without a nice amp.
Let us know you impressions.

I've 3-4 pairs of these in my house. My dad uses them as his home-studio monitor headphones. I tried them with my DV332 tube amp and really like the sound. Vocal is natural, treble is extended and detailed (but not as sparkle as that produced by "audiophile headphones"), and bass is tight and controlled.

For 40$, it's a steal.

$40 is a good deal for the Monitors, but not a great deal. It would be a great deal for DFs or Sextetts.

I sold my K240M and I'll be selling my Sextetts. I'm keeping the K240DF. They all sound good though, and the M is the cheapest.

Listening to the DF right now.

I've had the K240DF for many years and used to use them all the time in my home studio. Great cans.

SO...got these in the mail, and my initial impressions are:
1) They are harder to drive than my AD700 headphones, but the NuForce uDAC seems to power it pretty well with the volume knob at 12-1 o'clock.
2) The sound is pretty silky - not sure how to describe it - kind of like having rounded off corners? They don't seem to be as detailed as the AD700, but it still sounds very good and pleasant to listen to.
3) There's a good amount of lower end resonance, which I appreciate a lot.
4)The earpads don't go around my ear, but at the same time it's pretty comfy and not tight at all.

Pretty happy with my purchase! The cabe seems kinda flimsy though - any suggestions for an upgrade? Is a DYI upgrade hard?
