My third head-fi induced purchase should be ariving sometime next week. Wish me luck with installation and I promise a small review of the card once I get it.

I think that a direct compairson between an audigy and the av-710 could be useful for many not sure if they should upgrade their sound source.

Grado sr-80's and koss-kcs50's, i also have a rolls headphone amp but that's not exactly audiophile. I'm proablly going to order some etymotic er-4's after I get the av-710, so with some luck I'll use thoes in my comparison as well.

Today I got the Chaintech and I'm absolutely floored by how it sounds. I honestly wasn't expecting much. My audigy already sounded about on par with my Rio Karma, and I figured I was getting very respectable sound out of my Computer. Oh how I was wrong. Even my roomate, who doesn't know a thing about decent sounding audio was impressed over how much of a difference there was between the audigy and the av-710.
I'd like to do a decent side by side comparison, Just to help give people who were in my situation make the decision to upgrade. However, after I put the chaintech in my computer the audigy seems to have turned itself off. I figure it must be some sort of irq conflict, but if anyone has any suggestions or resources on how I might get the audigy working again I'd be very grateful.

May I say once again how much audio bliss i'm experiencing right now?

Go to control panel, sounds and audio devices:
in the audio tab you can switch default device (this is what most programs use). Some programs lets you select manually (for example, foobar).

Well it took all day and required upgrading my operating system to a very slugish xp, but i finally have both cards working in unison... still amazed with the sound, more to come.

I finally got some time to do a comparison between my old audigy 1 platinum and my new chaintech av-710. This comparison is meant to help the person who, like me is just starting to upgrade their equipment and is wondering how much of a difference they can expect. The equipment I used to test the 2 cards was a rolls headphone amp and grado sr-80 headphones. I’ve always been in love with my grados, but the rolls on the other hand is just now gaining my appreciation. Whenever I used the rolls with my audigy it only served to muddy the sound and did not otherwise improve the output in any way. Not only that by it had an audible hiss at nearly any volume above the halfway mark. The moment I plugged this amp into the back of the chaintech I immediately knew I hadn’t wasted my money on the card. Plugged into the audigy the rolls had no hiss or hum that I can detect. I can’t recommend the chaintech if you don’t have an amp, at least if you are using grados. Straight out of the back the sound easily clips with the low impedance sr-80’s and sounds tiny and uninteresting. With the addition of even a cheap studio amp I’m able to achieve what to me seems like aural heaven.
For the side by side comparison I used 2 albums by the books, which are varied enough to make for excellent test material. The audigy sounds wonderful in it’s own right but really can’t compete with the chaintech. What were hisses through the audigy turned into gentle whispers on the chaintech, what was background static on the audigy turned out to be fabric rustling, and what was awol on the audigy turned out to be ground moving lower bass notes on the chaintech. So sure the chaintech has countless added details and nuances that the audigy could simply not offer but how often does one pick apart music in such a way? Well…
As far as the overall sound is concerned the chaintech simply sounds more real than the audigy. Listening to it entails a definite goosebump factor. Voices sound right next to you, the guitar sounds like it could be under your arm, and when you hear something fall you try and pick it up. While the audigy sounds unengaging and grating at loud volumes, the chaintech makes you want to get up and get jiggy with it (both not good headphone practice). In general it’s much easier to get wrapped up in the music when it’s coming out of a better soundcard.
In conclusion, the chaintech is much better than the audigy one. Is this a subtle difference? Heck no! The first time I plugged in my headphones my jaw near hit the floor. I can strongly recommend this card to anyone who wants a card that can play music and do nothing else. It can be a pain to set up, especially getting creative cards to play nice with it, but this should pose no problem for the average user. In my experience with low impedance cans you will need some sort of amplification, no ifs ands or buts about it(I can’t comment on any other sort of headphone).

If you’re still using an audigy one or less for music, have a headphone amp, an extra pci slot and 23 bucks in the bank, get this card now!

Higher impeadance headphones require more power to drive so I guess the AV-710's built-in amp is pretty weak, however it does drive my 60 Ohm PortaPros pretty well.

What audio player did you use in the comparison? If you have a chance, you might want to try using Foobar with the resampler (to 48000 hz) active on the Audigy. You could also go to the control panel -> Sounds and Multimedia -> Audio tab -> Hit "advanced" on the Audigy sound playback device -> Performance tab and set the "sample rate conversion quality" to best. That's with win2k. It may be different with XP.

I found those changes made a huge difference with my Audigy. I can't help but wonder if they'd sound closer if you tried the above.

Zephix, I was using foobar with 4800khz resampling for the audigy and 9600khz resampling with the chaintech. As I understand it thoes are the settings for each card that makes them sound the best. I used my amp with the both the chaintech and audigy.

Mr.Radar, I have some koss kcs-50's and the chaintech seems to drive them fine as well but if I plug the grados directly into the back of the chaintech i get better sound out of the audigy's front headphone jack.
Also most of my setup difficulties had more to do with getting the audigy working again, rather than getting the chaintech itsef set up. However, I did run into problems with the older chaintech drivers causing lockups, so I had to use the newest ones.
Your set-up guide did help me greatly in getting the card setup though, so for that I thank you.

did u plug the sr-80s into the back speaker plug and in hi-res mode? the rear speaker headphone outs use a higher-quality dac. as of now, im using my ms-1 directly out of it and there is no clipping to speak of.

Rolls HA-43? Man, with the combination of that and Grado SR-80 (which can be harsh sometimes from the best amps), I wonder that you haven't gone deaf long ago...

If it's the HA-43 you're using, do yourself a big favor and pick up a nice Headsave Classic. If you can't hear the improvement, I'll personally eat a CD-ROM disc and send you a video of me doing it.
