Now, people who produce a track via a computer i.e. modern Dubstep, Electro, House must create a sound that they are looking for right? So when buying headphones, surely the only ones that will give you exactly what the track was intended to sound like are the ones the producer made while making the track?

Can anyone clarify my thoughts?

That's one theory.

Another theory is that, assuming the music was originally mastered on uncolored equipment, any other similarly uncolored equipment will reproduce the same sound.

Personally, I go for a third school of thought - no one can possibly hear what the artist had in mind, because it exists only in the mind of the artist. What you should strive for is hearing what you like about the music, not what the artist liked.

What makes you think your ears operate is exactly the same way as the producer's ears?

What makes you think every producer uses headphones when mastering?

Why does it matter?
