just one quick question : can the ipod mini be used as an external hard drive (like saving WORD documents, and any other files besides mp3s)??

I've heard this puts too much strain on the iPod's drive and is not really recommended, because the computer constantly reads off it.

For storing files though, it should be fine.

Can you do that just using iTunes or do you need a special piece of software for that? (I mean putting files
other than audio ones on the iPod...)

Both the iPods are recognised as a Mass Storage Device by Windows.
