While listening to this song last night, I figured out what the lyrics are really talking about!

Ring of Fire
Johnny Cash

Love is a burnin thing,
And it makes a fiery ring
Bound by wild desire --
I fell into a ring of fire.

I fell into a burnin ring of fire --
I went down, down, down
And the flames went higher,
And it burns, burn, burns,
The ring of fir, the ring of fire.

The taste of love is sweet
When hearts like ours meet.
I fell for you like a child --
Oh, but the fire ran wild.

I fell into a burnin ring of fire --
I went down, down, down
And the flames went higher,
And it burns, burn, burns,
The ring of fir, the ring of fire.

I fell into a burnin ring of fire --
I went down, down, down,
And the flames went higher,
And it burns, burn, burns,
The ring of fir, the ring of fire.

You see, the song is actually talking about herpes. Both herpes simplex a, and herpes simplex b. This means, cold sores as well as the sexually transmitted disease! Read the lyrics again with this in mind, my theory is air tight.

fizzmix,
you're thinking of one of cash's lesser known songs, "maw, why does it burn when i pee?"

actually, it's a little-known fact that johnny became quite a mexican food fan while in prison. the "love" he's referring to in the song is his love of chalupas and tacos with extra-hot sauce. the ring of fire is familiar to all as the after-effects of mexican food...

...or not.
